It's all white

It's all white, floor to ceiling

Moving to our new beach house has been an exciting journey. We finally got to live in our dream location, but were faced with the real challenge of it not being our dream home. The house is a 100-year-old beach bach – small, dark and sandwiched in-between the neighboring houses in Lyall Bay, Wellington, New Zealand.

Our creative vision for the kitchen and living room renovation was to open it up as much as possible, create light reflecting surfaces to produce an optical illusion of a bigger, lighter and airy space. I actively used every tip in a previous blog post of 'how to make a room look bigger' to make the best use of our limited space. With our design aesthetic we have tried to respect the history of the house and bring it into the future with an eclectic vibe that combines the old and new, the retro with the modern that works together in a symbiotic and aesthetically pleasing way.

Our brief and mood board had three key ideas “Beachy, Retro, Scandinavian” check it out on Pinterest. Again I took notes while writing the previous post around a 'Nautical' theme. We wanted to promote focus towards the ocean and maximize the views, so introduced beach influenced colors and accessories. Our retro, mid-century influence came about because we love the aesthetic of this era (and Mad Men) and because we’re on a budget with a bit of perseverance at local opportunity shops and Trademe (like eBay) we found some beautiful bargains.

To enlarge the space we went white from floors to ceiling to create a blank canvas to lighten and brighten. To avoid the living room and kitchen feeling too cold and clinical, we introduced soft furnishings, textures and bright colors via ornaments, cushions, art, books, rugs, throws and a leather pouf.

The white painted semi-gloss floorboards are a dramatic feature. Although it’s a common idea I've seen in magazines and blogs, I’d never seen it firsthand. So it was a bit of a risk, but well worth it. I kept the original Matai (native NZ wood) T&G floor boards that reflect the history of the home and I love that you can see the wear and tear of the floors through its white polyurethane face lift.

All white blank canvas with pop of pink color thanks to our awesome leather pouf from LetLiv. A white dress also acts as a fantastic blank canvas, bright pink is a fun, warm and feminine touch.

Blank white canvas with a pop of orange. Your eyes are naturally drawn to the orange in both of these images. The plain white and black dress make the orange purse a real statement and focus of the outfit, as with the macrame plant holder.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to add color, I painted these salt and pepper shakers, and of course lemons you can buy week to week and I use them for cooking virtually everything.

We loved our pink leather pouf so much that we also bought another turquoise version. They come in so many colors that you can brighten your home with any shade that pleases you. Check them out at letliv.co.nz

Lighting – our lighting options were quite strategic – the main living room shades are beachy and cast brilliant streams of light across the ceiling.

Cowhide rug – the rug sets off the white flooring and gives the room quirky character whilst adding softness.

Glass coffee table – we wanted to totally maximize the space so chose this glass coffee table that visually doesn't occupy much space whilst providing that functionality.

The BEFORE photo of the kitchen. We got rid of the window to the neighbours bedroom (I'm sure they appreciated that) and took the kitchen from 90's filth to present day shine!

The AFTER photo of the kitchen. All hi-gloss white cupboards and white engineered stone bench tops. Added color with the aqua tiles and yellow accessories.

The floating shelves enable a smooth transition from the kitchen and dining space into the living space. They also provide the opportunity to display beautiful objects and again more color.

Soft furnishings with yellow chevron cushion, beach and ocean inspired prints, and Scandinavian style poppy print to give the right feel and color combinations. All cushion covers purchased from Etsy.com

Again I inspired myself with the Tui art from Bob Steiner in a previous post and bought two birds to give more color and interest to the room. Three dimensional wall hangings are way more exciting than 2D.

Everything on this drawer is second-hand, including the drawer! I'm a firm believer in the fact that you don't need a lot of money to  make things look good, just a bit of patience and time to dig around for bargains.

Blue mountain cake tier, another Trademe bargain.

Bright orange macrame plant holder,  I made this myself! Check here for an easy tutorial.

We've tried to maximize the views to the sea.

The white book shelf blends in and lets the books and decor stand out. Check the nautical accessories of the shell lamp and the glass buoys. The colorful rug was super cheap, $15 from a local importer. These common Indian rag rugs give the necessary color and texture without the expensive price tag. Our puppies Sookie and Brian also add to the soft furnishings.

Chilling with my puppies.

I hope you're inspired to try all white, whether its interiors or an outfit for a day. Make a statement with a blank white canvas and go bold and bright with accessories.

Nautical - life's a beach

Nothing says nautical like navy and white stripes.  Sunhats, sailboats, shells and sunshine are also highly complementary.

My new home at the beach has inspired this post as I've been quite taken by the nautical theme. I've never owned a house by the beach, so I now feel quite entitled and even obliged to introduce some sense of a nautical feeling into my home decor. Complimentary

The navy blue and white stripes are of course the classic combination, originally called the Breton Stripes which were the design of the French seamen's uniform. Coco Chanel then popularized the signature style and took it mainstream with her stripe shirt and palazzo pants combo, which is where the nautical craze all started and has been going strong for decades. For more on the history of the beloved nautical style check this article Stripes Ahoy!

From the movie "Coco before Chanel" Audrey Tautou does a brilliant job of playing the fashion pioneer.

I've always liked the nautical look, I think it is classic and has this New York Hamptons, old rich,  Jackie Onassis sophistication about it, but maybe that's just me or maybe I watch too much Revenge!

For interiors it opens a whole world of boat themed accessories like ropes, buoys, ship steering wheels, anchors, nautical maps, oars, flags, etc. But as per our previous post 5 Fashion and Interior Design Fails you can take a theme too far, so I wouldn't recommend you get all of the accessories listed unless you want to make people feel like they're actually on a boat!

White is the best starting point for all things nautical then add a splash of navy stripe, a lifesaver, maybe a captains hat and a nautical map and you're away sailing....

Another twist on Nautical - taking the basic stripe to a chevron. Go wild and put that stripe on an angle!

Nautical is not just about navy, but red can give you just as much of that sailor sensation. Check the beautiful and rustic link chain table legs the rope ornament and the basket lampshade. Its these touches that give that nautical feel to this very contemporary and stylish interior.

I find the blue glass buoy so special. I've tired to find  some vintage glass buoys to decorate my home, but it is nigh on impossible here in New Zealand. But I've managed to find some replica glass buoys from Freedom Furniture which are a good substitute and have placated my yearning for these beautiful items. The red pumps are a perfect complement to this nautical outfit, with the classic Chanel stripe top and skinny black jeans.

I LOVE this nautical wallpaper. This would be quite a commitment stylistically and I don't know if I could do it, but RESPECT to those that can pull it off. I also love this hipster retro styling for the nautical look. A sentiment to how timeless this style is, you can make it work for you whatever your age.

So more of a beachy look pulling back a bit on the stripe. Check the oar coat rack, what a great weekend project!  A simple white dress styled for the beach can be very fun, relaxed and pretty.

The round ship window is also a stunning nautical touch to your interior. We've painted our floorboards white and I can't wait to see how I can start decorating on this blank canvas.

Now just plain beachy I can't go past a good bikini. These ceramics from ENDEsign on Etsy are so modern and unique. Moontide is a wonderful New Zealand swimwear brand that produce high quality togs (as we call them in NZ).  We here in the southern hemisphere are heading into winter and these images are a bit of a sad farewell, but none-the less enjoyable.

Nautical map wallpaper can make a great backdrop for your nautical scene. Don't forget to accessorize  but as Coco would say "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory".

Now ropes are one of my favourite nautical accessories, rustic and beautiful. These light clusters would add wonderful character to a living area or kitchen. This necklace is pretty intense, but there are quite a few ways to wear it, check it out at Bec Brittain

Ropes and knots can make an interesting and unique wall display. This necklace from Etsy is a bit more delicate than the previous example, the colour and unique texture make this quite a statement piece.

Now for some nautical DIY projects, from nail art to a rope ottoman get creative! I have a Pinterest board called "DIY Dreams" because I'm quite conscious of the fact that the I'll never get around to it, but it still doesn't stop me from adding pins to my board and dreaming...

The Rope Ottoman is perfect for the beach house, looks easy, but its probably quite complicated... - diy-craft.com
